What's Left Behind is the fifteenth episode of the TV series Moonlight.

Synopsis[]

A boy is abducted. ADA Talbot asks Beth to help because she's investigated similar cases, and Mick volunteers because he knew the family.

Plot[]

Beth is still unemployed after quitting BuzzWire and a bit bored. Due to her reputation for solving cases, Ben Talbot offers Beth a job as a civilian investigator working for his office. He asks her to investigate the kidnapping of a young boy named Jacob. Talbot suspects he is the same kidnapper and murderer that Beth had reported on before at BuzzWire.

Mick sees the news headline with Beth in the background and recognises the house. After turning up, to Beth’s surprise, and some questioning, he suspects that the boy’s father, Robert Fordham, could be his son and the missing boy Jacob his grandson.

During World War II, Mick and his buddy, Ray Fordham, were bombed by mortar and both injured. Ray was badly injured and told Mick to look after his wife Lilah. They were separated and Ray disappeared, with everyone thinking he was dead. Mick went home and looked after Lilah and the two ended up having an affair. After a few months, Ray recovered enough to return home. Mick couldn’t forgive himself and cut off all contact with them.

Beth and Mick figure out the kidnapper came in through an old coal chute and was probably a worker employed in the house renovations the year before. The two other kidnappings were from similar houses with underground access. Ben Talbot’s team start sifting through all the workers. Beth comments that Ben has a good team and Mick asks her if he should be jealous of Ben. She says yes but, as she has no romantic interest in Ben, his jealousy makes her feel more desirable.

Mick tells Joseph that the missing boy might be his grandson. Joseph comments it might be his last contribution to the human gene pool. Unless Mick and Beth rewrite the rules of vampire love and figure out how to procreate! Which Beth, who has just entered, manages to overhear. Later, Mick continues the conversation with Beth and confirms that vampires can’t have kids and was that a deal breaker? Beth jokes that they haven’t even slept together and it might not be any good.

In going over suspects, Robert says there was one worker who liked to work there at night, Ken Verdolino.  Mick thinks he is responsible for the kidnapping. Then Verdilino actually rings Mick and asks him whether he’s worked it out yet. He states that he is going after Beth. However, Mick rushes to save her but misses Verdolino. He goes to Verdolino's house and finds an old basement in the backyard. Meanwhile, Beth and Talbot are looking through the house and hear shots. Verdilino shoots Mick several times but he doesn’t die. He commits suicide without telling Mick where Jacob is. However, Mick hears Jacob’s heartbeat through a newly erected brick wall and rescues him.

During the investigation, Beth helps Mick with a bioanalysis DNA test to see whether he is actually Robert’s father. She gives him the envelope with the results. He reads it and says Robert is not my son: “Good for you Ray!”. Beth says: “I’m Sorry”. He replies: “No. This is the way it’s supposed to be!” Beth adds that family is not just about DNA.
